Tudge distingue trois niveaux en interaction = aspects culturels, interpersonnels, individuels.
Pour lui la recherche sur l'apprentisage entre pairs doit à présent se consacrer aux aspects interpersonnels :
“It is at this level of analysis that attention can be focused on the actual processes of interaction between the developing individual and his or her environment. That environment is of course a social environment, for although it can be thought of as purely physical (in the case of solitary play), the social is nonetheless present in the provision of play materials, space or time for play, prior knowledge of what are considered appropriate and inappropriate ways in which to play with the materials, and so on. Interpersonal interactions are necessarily key to understand peer learning, for although we need to know about individual characteristics of the two or more individuals involved, the interactions between them are crucial.” (Tudge & Hogan, 1999, p.45)
